这个单词最早来源于法语sabot，表示“木鞋”。在中世纪，只有贵族才有钱购买皮鞋，普通的老百姓买不起皮鞋，只能穿造价便宜，但同样防潮保暖的木鞋。
中世纪的法国，老百姓几乎人人都穿着木鞋。每当工人和管理层发生矛盾时，工人们往往会偷偷把脚上的木鞋脱下来，扔进机器里来搞破坏。后来就衍生了sabotage这个英语单词，专门表示蓄意破坏，也可以泛指任何形式的破坏活动。
